H2/O2 Safety for Electrolysis Systems

Level 2: Electrolysis System Safety

This standalone course teaches the fundamental understanding and awareness of the two hazardous fluids involved in electrolyzers: hydrogen and oxygen. Students will learn about the inherent combustion risks, mitigating factors, and known failure modes for electrolysis systems.

Audience.

This course is designed for all personnel who work with or around electrolysis systems. It provides an introduction appropriate for both non-technical and technical personnel.

Learning Goals.

Students will receive a basic introduction to hydrogen and the hydrogen combustion hazard, oxygen and the oxygen fire hazard, and the operating principles of electrolyzers. Students will learn about the inherent combustion risks, mitigating factors, and known failure modes for electrolysis systems. Hydrogen best practices applied specifically to electrolysis systems enable students to come away with practical strategies for leak prevention and detection, ventilation, safe venting and disposal of all outlet streams, and more. This is a stand-alone course without any WHA course pre-requisites. Quizzes are provided to review the main points in each section.

Student Outcomes.

After completing this course, students will be equipped with the basic understanding necessary to apply good practices for the installation and use of electrolyzers.
